Intuition: The direct perception of truth, independent of any reasoning process; pure, untaught, non-inferential knowledge.
There is an inner knowing that can guide ones decisions in life as well as in the creation of art. By favouring intuition over intellectual analysis, ideas and images may emerge that are not readily available to the conscious mind. Through this one may transcend the limitations of ordinary thought processes to discover something entirely new and previously unknowable.
This series began with an intention to combine collage and painting in a way that integrates elements of both media to create something unique in form. Source photos have been cut into pieces that emphasize shapes contained within the image while divorcing the subjects from their original context. These shapes are combined to create new forms before paint is added to emphasize or obscure certain areas. Initially black and white was chosen to simplify the parameters of process, focussing on elements of shape, line, and contrast to create visually pleasing interactions of form. In subsequent pieces color is introduced initially in muted tones before developing into hues of great vibrancy and contrast. The evolution of these works represents a flowering of visual possibilities through the exploration and development of new techniques.
